A stylized schematic depicts gymnosperm microsporocytes, large diploid reproductive cells within the microsporangium of a male cone. In botany and plant developmental biology, these cells (MMC, microspore mother cell; also PMC, pollen mother cell) reside in the microsporangial tissue of the microstrobilus. Functionally, each microsporocyte undergoes meiosis to produce haploid microspores that develop into pollen grains, facilitating pollination and fertilization. Hierarchically, the illustration shows a cell within sporangial tissue that forms part of the male reproductive organ of gymnosperms.
