A schematic microbiology illustration depicting the Gram-positive bacterial cell envelope: a thick peptidoglycan (PG) layer external to the cytoplasmic phospholipid bilayer, without an outer membrane. The PG, a carbohydrate-peptide polymer, forms multiple stacked sheets providing rigidity and osmotic protection, and embeds teichoic acids (TA) and lipoteichoic acids (LTA) that anchor to the membrane. Hierarchically, the cell wall surrounds the cell membrane within the prokaryotic cell. In bacteriology and pathology, this structure retains crystal violet in Gram staining and is a major antibiotic target.
