A simplified botanical diagram of stem grafting shows a green scion wedge inserted into a vertical slit in the brown trunk of a woody vascular plant. In the biological hierarchy, a shoot cutting (scion) is united with the stem organ of the rootstock within the whole plant. In botany, plant anatomy, and horticulture, this technique enables vegetative propagation by aligning the vascular cambium (VC) to reestablish xylem and phloem continuity, allowing transport of water and photoassimilates at the graft union on the trunk.
