Glycerol molecule. A simplified ball-and-stick chemical diagram depicts the three-carbon triol with three hydroxyl groups, showing carbon in gray, oxygen in red, and hydrogen in white. In biochemical hierarchy, it is a small organic molecule serving as the backbone of the lipid macromolecules triacylglycerol (TAG) and glycerophospholipids within cells. In biochemistry and organic chemistry, glycerol is phosphorylated to glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) in the cytosol, enabling entry into glycolysis and gluconeogenesis and supporting energy storage and membrane synthesis.
