Gavage swiss. The illustration depicts oral gavage of a laboratory mouse using a syringe fitted with a gavage needle. At the organismal level, a Swiss strain Mus musculus (house mouse) is manually restrained while the instrument is guided through the oral cavity and esophagus into the stomach of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In laboratory animal science and pharmacology, this technique (PO, per os) delivers defined volumes of test compounds or nutrients for controlled systemic exposure.
