A cross-sectional diagram of skin showing a superficial thermal injury confined to the epidermis. The erythematous surface overlies an intact dermal–epidermal junction, with normal pink dermis and uninjured yellow subcutaneous adipose tissue (hypodermis) beneath. In anatomical and dermatologic pathology terms, this represents a first-degree (superficial) burn, characterized by painful erythema without blistering or necrosis. The illustrated structure is a tissue of the integumentary system, whose barrier function and thermoregulation remain preserved because deeper dermal appendages are unaffected.
