A ciliated larval stage (miracidium) of the sheep liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica, F. hepatica) is shown, with dense internal germinal cells and peripheral cilia enabling motility. In parasitology and microbiology, this organism represents an early stage within the trematode life cycle (phylum Platyhelminthes). Its role is to swim in freshwater and invade a snail intermediate host, where it initiates asexual development within host tissues.
