A stylized illustration of the encysted metacercaria of Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica), a trematode parasite. In parasitology and microbiology, this larval stage represents the infective form within the life cycle hierarchy, developing within a protective cyst on aquatic vegetation. The organism, a helminth of phylum Platyhelminthes, transmits to mammalian hosts after ingestion, later excysting to migrate to the hepatobiliary system, particularly the bile ducts, where the adult fluke resides and causes fascioliasis in ruminants and humans.
