The illustration shows a cell’s plasma membrane underlying an extracellular macromolecular network composed of collagen-like fibrils, fibronectin/laminin adhesive glycoproteins, and proteoglycans with glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains. In the biological hierarchy, these molecules assemble a tissue-level scaffold around individual cells at the PM (plasma membrane) interface.
