A simplified schematic of a sterol lipid found in fungal cell membranes. In biological hierarchy, it represents a small-molecule metabolite embedded within the plasma membrane (PM) of a fungal cell. In biochemistry and microbiology, this molecule regulates membrane fluidity and permeability and serves as a precursor of vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).
