A histological illustration depicts stratified squamous epithelium forming the skin’s epidermis. Multiple layers of keratinocytes are shown, with flattened surface cells (stratum corneum), polygonal suprabasal cells, and a basal layer anchored to the basement membrane (BM). Dendritic melanocytes extend processes among keratinocytes, and a bluish Langerhans cell, an APC (antigen-presenting cell), appears within the suprabasal region. In biological hierarchy, cells constitute a tissue of the integumentary system. In anatomy, histology, and dermatology, this tissue provides barrier function, keratinization, pigmentation, and immune surveillance at the body surface.
