A simplified histologic illustration shows polygonal keratinocytes arranged in a cohesive layer, each with a central nucleus and numerous dark granules. These granular-layer cells occupy the stratum granulosum (SG) of the epidermis, a tissue of the skin within the integumentary system. In histology and dermatology, these cells promote keratinization and barrier formation by accumulating keratohyalin granules (KHG) and supplying proteins for the cornified envelope and water-impermeable lipid layers.
