A stylized histology cross-section of stratified squamous keratinized epithelium forming the epidermis of the integumentary system. Flattened anucleate layers represent the stratum corneum (SC), overlying nucleated keratinocytes of the viable epidermis that culminate in the basal layer (SB). In the biological hierarchy, keratinocytes (cells) compose a tissue that covers the body surface.
