A schematic cross-section of a developing long bone shaft depicts vascular invasion during endochondral ossification. A periosteal bud carrying blood vessels penetrates calcified hyaline cartilage in the diaphysis, where spongy (trabecular) bone forms within the primary ossification center (POC). Within the biological hierarchy, cartilage and bone tissues reside inside the organ-level long bone. In developmental anatomy and histology, this process replaces cartilage with bone, initiates marrow cavity formation, and supports longitudinal growth.
