A simplified developmental biology illustration depicts a cartilaginous template of a developing long bone with central calcification, representing early endochondral ossification in the diaphysis. At the hierarchy level, chondrocytes (cells) within hyaline cartilage (tissue) undergo hypertrophy and ECM (extracellular matrix) mineralization, preceding formation of a primary ossification center. In anatomy and histology, this process enables replacement of cartilage by bone to drive longitudinal growth of long bones. The image represents an anatomical structure, a long bone primordium.
