A schematic shows a mammalian blastocyst loosely apposed to the uterine luminal epithelium, representing the initial step of implantation. The embryo consists of an outer trophectoderm (TE) surrounding a fluid-filled cavity and an eccentrically placed inner cell mass (ICM), within the uterine lumen of the endometrium. In the hierarchy, cells form layers (TE, ICM) within the preimplantation embryo, which interfaces with endometrial tissue. In reproductive biology and embryology, this apposition enables subsequent adhesion and invasion that establish pregnancy.
