A schematic distillation system shows a vertical tray column with several stages where liquid pools on each tray and overflows via downcomers, while vapor (depicted as white clouds) rises countercurrent through the liquid. A reboiler at the base supplies heat and returns vapor to the column, and a top condenser cools overhead vapor to provide reflux. A feed stream enters the column, and separated overhead and bottoms products are withdrawn, illustrating stagewise vapor–liquid equilibrium.
