A schematic cross-section depicts an intervertebral disc (IVD) with nucleus pulposus (NP) extruded through a torn annulus fibrosus (AF), forming a free sequestered fragment. The IVD resides between adjacent vertebral bodies within the spinal column. In anatomy and pathology, this lesion represents disc herniation sequestration, where displaced NP material enters the spinal canal. Normally, the IVD cushions axial loads and permits motion; when sequestered, the fragment may compress neural elements such as spinal nerve roots.
