A stylized transverse section of the midbrain shows bilaterally reduced dark bands corresponding to the substantia nigra (SN), indicating loss of neuromelanin-rich dopaminergic neurons in the pars compacta (SNpc). In the anatomical hierarchy, this nucleus is part of the basal ganglia circuitry within the brainstem. Within neuroanatomy and neuropathology, the SN modulates motor control through the nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) pathway, and its degeneration is characteristic of Parkinson disease (PD).
