A schematic of the pancreas shows the main pancreatic duct (MPD) prominently widened, coursing from the tail to the head and joining the common bile duct (CBD) near the duodenum. In anatomical hierarchy, the MPD is a tubular anatomical structure within the exocrine pancreas, which itself is an organ of the digestive system located in the upper abdomen adjacent to the duodenum and gallbladder. In physiology and gastroenterology, the MPD transports enzyme-rich pancreatic juice and bicarbonate to the duodenal lumen; its enlargement represents a pathologic dilation.
