A stylized ball-and-stick depiction shows a 2-deoxy-D-ribose sugar covalently linked to an inorganic phosphate group (PO4^3−), representing the sugar–phosphate moiety of a nucleic acid. In biochemistry and molecular biology, this small molecule forms the repeating backbone of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), providing structural support for nucleotide sequence and base pairing. Hierarchically, it is a molecular subunit within a polynucleotide polymer. The structure occurs in cellular chromosomal nucleic acids, where phosphate–ester bonds create the 5′→3′ phosphodiester linkage between adjacent nucleotides.
