This stylized ball-and-stick depiction shows 2-deoxyribose, a pentose monosaccharide forming the sugar component of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The molecule, represented as a five-membered furanose ring with attached hydroxyl and hydrogen substituents, participates in the sugar–phosphate backbone via phosphodiester bonds. In biological hierarchy, it is a small organic molecule within the polymeric nucleic acid present in cells. Relevant to biochemistry and molecular biology, its absence of a 2′-OH group confers greater stability compared with ribose in RNA.
