Schematic representation of D-dimer (DD), a fibrin degradation product composed of two D domains derived from cross-linked fibrin. In the biological hierarchy, it is a protein fragment generated within the coagulation and fibrinolytic system. In hematology, physiology, and biochemistry, it forms when plasmin cleaves factor XIIIa–stabilized fibrin and subsequently circulates in blood plasma. Functionally, this molecule serves as a clinical biomarker for active thrombosis and fibrinolysis, aiding diagnosis of venous thromboembolism and disseminated intravascular coagulation in pathology.
