Cytochrome protein c. A minimalist schematic depicts a small globular electron carrier protein. The illustration represents cytochrome c (Cyt c), a heme c–containing metalloprotein (molecule) located in the mitochondrial intermembrane space, peripherally associated with the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) of eukaryotic cells. In cellular biochemistry and physiology, Cyt c transfers electrons from complex III to complex IV in the electron transport chain, supporting oxidative phosphorylation, and when released to cytosol, participates in apoptosis by activating Apaf-1. It illustrates a protein within an organelle of the cell.
