Cumulus cloud. An illustration of a low-level, cauliflower-like convective cloud composed chiefly of condensed water droplets in the lower troposphere. In meteorology and atmospheric physics, this genus of cloud (Cu, cumulus) forms when moist air rises to the lifting condensation level (LCL) and cools adiabatically. As part of the atmospheric hierarchy, it represents a mesoscale structure built from individual cells of turbulent updrafts. Functionally, it indicates fair-weather convection and can signal localized uplift that may precede shallow showers if instability increases.
