Crispr cas molecule. A stylized molecular rendering of a CRISPR–Cas ribonucleoprotein complex bound to a segment of double-stranded DNA. In molecular biology and biochemistry, this enzyme complex comprises a Cas endonuclease protein (CRISPR-associated) and a guide RNA (gRNA) derived from CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats), forming an RNA–protein hierarchy within the prokaryotic adaptive immune system. The complex recognizes a complementary protospacer in the DNA and catalyzes site-specific cleavage, a function exploited for genome editing. The illustrated entity is a macromolecular complex interacting with DNA; species are prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea).
