Cortisol molecule. The illustration presents the 2D structural formula of hydrocortisone (cortisol), a steroid hormone, showing the four fused-ring steroid backbone with carbon atoms in gray, oxygen atoms in red, and hydrogens in white. In biological hierarchy, this small molecule hormone functions within the endocrine system as a chemical messenger produced by the adrenal cortex, specifically the zona fasciculata. In biochemistry and endocrinology, cortisol regulates glucose metabolism, stress responses via the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, blood pressure, and immune modulation. The structure depicts hydroxyl groups and ketone functionalities typical of a glucocorticoid.
