A schematic from renal anatomy and physiology shows two nephron types within a kidney: a cortical nephron with a short loop of Henle (LOH) confined largely to the renal cortex and a juxtamedullary nephron with a long LOH extending into the medulla alongside the vasa recta. Each nephron contains a glomerulus within Bowman’s capsule connected to proximal and distal tubules that drain into a collecting duct (CD). These structures mediate plasma filtration, tubular reabsorption and secretion, and countercurrent concentration of urine.
