A simplified schematic depicts a regressing corpus luteum (CL) within the ovary of a rat (Rattus norvegicus). In reproductive anatomy and physiology, the CL is a temporary endocrine gland of the female reproductive system that synthesizes progesterone (P4). During luteolysis in the estrous cycle, luteal tissue shrinks and loses steroidogenic capacity, reducing circulating P4 and enabling follicular development and the next ovulation. Hierarchically, luteal cells constitute the CL, which is embedded in ovarian tissue located in the pelvic cavity.
