Coronal section schematic of an adult rat (Rattus norvegicus) telencephalon centered on the ventral hippocampal formation. Bilaterally, the dentate gyrus and CA1–CA3 fields are traced with dark purple contours, with the subiculum continuous with CA1 along the medial border of the formation. Ventricular space is visible near the midline, and the hippocampal curvature suggests associated fimbria/alveus tracts. The tissue is rendered in shades of pink with purple boundaries, corresponding to a frontal (coronal) slice commonly used in stereotaxic atlas work for studies of hippocampal circuitry, memory, affect, and systems-level neuroscience.
