A cross-sectional schematic illustrates the layered microanatomy of the cornea. From anterior to posterior it shows a stratified nonkeratinized corneal epithelium, Bowman layer, a collagen-rich stroma with spindle-shaped keratocytes embedded in extracellular matrix (ECM), Descemet membrane (DM), and a simple squamous endothelium. This tissue hierarchy represents layers within an ocular organ of the anterior segment. In ophthalmic anatomy and histology, these structures provide a protective barrier, confer refractive transparency, and regulate stromal hydration via endothelial function.
