A stylized botanical illustration shows a heap of dry, tan, ribbed fruits commonly referred to as coriander seeds. Each unit is a schizocarp, consisting of two mericarps that enclose the true seeds of the angiosperm herb Coriandrum sativum (C. sativum), also called coriander or cilantro. In plant anatomy and botany, this reproductive structure develops from umbels of the Apiaceae inflorescence. Functionally, the diaspores enable seed dispersal and propagation; in pharmacognosy and food science they are harvested and used as a culinary spice.
