Illustration shows a bleached coral reef with pale, depigmented branching colonies exposing calcium carbonate (CaCO3) skeletons on the seafloor. The organisms are reef-building stony corals (phylum Cnidaria, order Scleractinia), multicellular colonies of polyps within a shallow marine benthic ecosystem. In marine biology and pathology, bleaching reflects loss or dysfunction of symbiotic dinoflagellates (family Symbiodiniaceae), reducing photosynthesis and energy supply. Functionally, these corals deposit CaCO3 to build reef structures that support biodiversity and buffer coastlines.
