In the biological hierarchy, each alveolus is a microscopic air sac within a pulmonary lobule of the respiratory system. The structure, studied in anatomy, respiratory physiology, and pathology, is an anatomical structure responsible for gas exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Alveolar walls comprise type I (AT1) and type II (AT2) pneumocytes, with pulmonary surfactant (PS) maintaining patency; collapse reduces ventilated surface area in the distal lung at the level of respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts.
