A simplified illustration shows a high, veil-like cloud layer composed of thin, fibrous streaks spread across the sky. In meteorology (atmospheric science), this represents a cirrostratus (Cs) cloud, a cloud genus within the high-cloud family of the troposphere. This meteorological phenomenon forms in the upper troposphere, typically above about 6 km, and consists primarily of ice crystals. Cirrostratus often precedes warm fronts and can produce solar or lunar halos by refraction.
