Diagram of a biological membrane showing a phospholipid bilayer with intercalated cholesterol molecules. In cell biology and membrane biochemistry, this structure represents the boundary of the cell, the plasma membrane (PM). Amphipathic phospholipids (PLs) present hydrophilic headgroups outward and hydrophobic fatty‑acyl tails inward, while cholesterol (Chol) inserts between tails. At the molecular‑to‑cellular hierarchy, PL and Chol molecules self‑assemble into the PM, enabling selective transport, mechanical stability, modulation of membrane fluidity, and formation of ordered microdomains (lipid rafts).
