A medical instrument with a long plastic handle and a tapered, multirow bristle head designed to collect exfoliated epithelial cells from the cervix for cytological analysis. Used in gynecology and pathology during the Pap test (Papanicolaou test), it samples the transformation zone (TZ) at the squamocolumnar junction, including the endocervical canal and ectocervix, to screen for HPV (human papillomavirus)–associated dysplasia and cervical cancer. The device functions at the tissue–cell hierarchy within the female reproductive tract of Homo sapiens (human).
