Central vacuole. A simplified diagram of the large, fluid-filled organelle characteristic of mature plant cells. This membrane-bound compartment lies within the cytoplasm of plant cells (Viridiplantae) and is enclosed by the TP (tonoplast), which separates the cell sap from the cytosol. In cell biology and plant physiology, the central vacuole maintains turgor pressure, stores water, ions, and metabolites, sequesters waste, and contributes to pH homeostasis. Hierarchically, it is an intracellular organelle within a eukaryotic cell that forms part of plant tissues.
