A schematic of telophase in mitotic cell division shows two nascent daughter eukaryotic cells side by side. Within each cell, condensed chromosomes (DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid) are surrounded as the nuclear envelope reforms, reestablishing a nucleus inside the cytoplasm. Spindle microtubules have shortened toward centrosomes, the microtubule-organizing centers (MTOCs), positioned near the cell cortex. In hierarchical terms, chromosomes reside within the nucleus, which lies within the cell. In cell biology/cytology, this biological process (mitosis) restores nuclear compartments and prepares cytokinesis, ensuring faithful chromosome segregation.
