Tight junctions (TJ, zonula occludens) seal the apical intercellular space, adherens junctions (AJ) and desmosomes couple actin microfilaments and intermediate filaments across the lateral membranes, and basal hemidesmosomes anchor the cytoskeleton to the basement membrane/extracellular matrix (ECM). In the hierarchy, these junctional protein complexes reside within epithelial cells of a tissue, enabling barrier function, mechanical cohesion, and signaling studied in cell biology and histology.
