A schematic front view depicts an immune receptor with stacked extracellular domains above a transmembrane stalk embedded in the plasma membrane. CD46 (cluster of differentiation 46), also known as MCP (membrane cofactor protein), is a type I membrane glycoprotein examined in immunology and cell biology. As part of the complement regulatory system, it acts as a cofactor for complement factor I to inactivate C3b and C4b, thereby protecting host cells from complement-mediated damage and functioning as a cell-surface receptor.
