A schematic cross-section of a cerebral microvessel shows a pericyte wrapping the abluminal surface of endothelial cells forming the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Within the biological hierarchy, the pericyte is a mural cell within the capillary wall of the central nervous system (CNS) microcirculation, embedded in a shared basement membrane. In neuroanatomy and vascular physiology, this cell type regulates capillary tone, supports endothelial tight junctions (TJs), limits transcytosis, and maintains barrier integrity as part of the neurovascular unit (NVU).
