A schematic of an early embryo shows the bilaminar embryonic disc at the embryonic pole within a blastocyst. The disc comprises columnar epiblast (EPI) overlying cuboidal hypoblast (HYP), forming a two-layered tissue derived from the inner cell mass (ICM) and bordered by trophoblast. In embryology and developmental biology, this anatomical structure functions as the organizer for axial patterning and initiates gastrulation, ultimately giving rise to the three germ layers and extraembryonic membranes such as the amnion and yolk sac.
