This scientific illustration shows an elongate, ray-finned fish with an armored body and a series of separate dorsal finlets along the back. The head is small with a pointed snout and lateral eyes, and paddle-like pectoral fins emerge just behind the gill cover. Rhomboid, ganoid-like scales create vertical banding, while the rounded caudal fin is mottled. The coloration transitions from slate-blue dorsally to a pale ventrum.
