In the biological hierarchy, it is a protein embedded in neuronal membranes within the central nervous system, acting on the transmembrane substrate amyloid precursor protein (APP). In biochemistry and neurobiology, BACE1 catalyzes the β-cleavage of APP, enabling production of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in concert with γ-secretase, a key step in the amyloidogenic pathway relevant to Alzheimer’s disease pathology.
