A schematic hematology illustration shows a basophil myelocyte, a granulocytic precursor cell of the WBC (white blood cell) lineage in BM (bone marrow). The cell has basophilic cytoplasm containing numerous coarse, dark granules surrounding a centrally placed oval nucleus. In the biological hierarchy, it is a developing immune cell within hematopoietic tissue, studied in histology and pathology. Functionally, it differentiates into basophils that mediate allergic inflammation via histamine and heparin release.
