Bacteriophage — A stylized diagram of a tailed virus that infects bacteria. The virion (virus particle) shows an icosahedral capsid, a helical tail sheath, a baseplate, and multiple tail fibers, substructures that attach to the bacterial cell envelope. In microbiology and virology, a phage (bacteriophage) functions by adsorbing to a bacterium and injecting deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) through the tail tube. This entity is a virus, not a cell or organ, operating extracellularly at the surface of bacterial hosts, often initiating a lytic replication cycle.
