Azobenzene molecule. The diagram shows a 2D skeletal formula with two benzene rings connected by an azo linkage (N=N), with each nitrogen singly bonded to a ring carbon. This small aromatic organic molecule features an azo functional group within a larger conjugated system. In organic chemistry and photochemistry, it acts as a photoresponsive switch that undergoes reversible E/Z (trans/cis) isomerization under UV–visible light, enabling light-controlled changes in molecular conformation and material properties.
