A cross-sectional schematic of an artery shows an atherosclerotic plaque protruding into and narrowing the vascular lumen. The lesion is a pathological plaque within the tunica intima of the arterial wall, part of the cardiovascular system. A pink fibrous cap overlies a yellow lipid-rich necrotic core, with surrounding smooth muscle media and adventitia. In cardiovascular pathology, this intimal atheroma reduces perfusion and increases risk of ischemia and thrombosis by stenosing the vessel.
