A stylized medical illustration depicts partially collapsed pulmonary alveoli at the distal end of a terminal bronchiole. In biological hierarchy, the alveolus is a microscopic air sac within lung parenchyma of the respiratory system, shown here with apposed walls and reduced luminal air space. In anatomy and pulmonary pathology, this alveolar collapse (atelectasis) impairs function by limiting gas exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2), decreasing ventilation and contributing to hypoxemia at the affected site within the lung.
